Lady with Anchor Georgian Fireplace

Long associated with Emma, Lady Hamilton, wife of the British ambassador to Naples and noted antiquarian, Sir William Hamilton, but better known as the amour of Lord Nelson.

The American writer Susan Sontag has referred to Hamilton's acquisition of a chimneypiece from his friends the Adams for use in his Naples residence. Emma Hamilton was frequently sketched by David Allan, drawing master of the Trustees Acacdemy in Edinburgh, during his time in Naples, and it is likely that this depiction is based on one of his sketch portraits of Emma in her 'attitudes'.

Thistle & Rose revived this pattern for the Captain's residence of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews.
