Based on the 'mighty fowl' from excavations at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, which Horace Walpole bought for his 'Gothick' villa of Strawberry Hill. Sir William Hamilton had a similar one.
As a symbol of the new republic it became an instant hit in the United States, where a variant by Robert Wellford of Philadephia is preserved in the Winterhur Musem, Delaware. The eagle also featured as a heraldic device for various families, such as the Munroes and the Grahams, and was frequently celebrated in architecture.
