This is a fireplace from a principal room in Heriot Row, Edinburgh which we restored and painted. You will notice that the slate lintel is narrower than the jambs which has the effect of making the fireplace look slightly squat and broad. Also the grate, which was made in China, lacks crispness in its decorative detail. This arrangement may conform to certain design aesthetics but is too muted and heavy to set off the neoclassical lightness and exhuberance  of  the Adam chimneypiece.
